Beyond

Cattle Track Arts Compound, Scottsdale, Arizona contains some interesting buildings.
Beyond my courtyard
I sense the distant mountains
waiting for fresh snow.

Conundrum

A windmill stands still on a windless December day at Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden , Yuma, Arizona.
Autumn conundrum:
How many clouds does it take
to spin a windmill?

Celebrate

Fading bougainvillea blossoms have been tossed on a trash heap in Wellton, Arizona.
Can I truly celebrate
When the brilliant blossoms fade?
Can this heart of mine rejoice
When such folly is displayed?
Yet even as they’re fading,
And although they cannot sing,
The blossoms clearly show me
Life on Earth’s a fragile thing.

Secrets

A palo verde tree towers over a dry wash in Yuma County, Arizona.
Autumn afternoon—
an old tree full of secrets
keeps them to itself.

Where and Why

The Pacific Ocean reaches shore yards away from the U.S.-Mexico Border at Border Field State Park, California.
Where are the children?
Why does the sea seem to weep
as autumn draws near?

Blazing

The chapel at Mission San Xavier del Bac, Tucson, Arizona can be seen through a wrought-iron fence.
Blazing midday sun—
the chapel bells are silent,
but one wren still sings.

Song

A photo mural in Yuma, Arizona celebrates the gift of corn.
Sunrise to sunset
we hear your song, Corn Mother,
sweeter than ripe plums.

Sky

The sky is bold and beautiful in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona .
Languid afternoon—
with my fingertips I trace
the clouds on your face.

Blue Monday: Abandoned Motel

Graffiti defaces an abandoned motel north of Flagstaff, Arizona.
Graffiti mars the old hotel,
It’s feeling rather blue.
Is there some way to cheer it up?
I don’t know, do you?

deepening autumn—
the longing of broken things
to be whole again
