Saintly Tree

DSC_0010 (4)
Autumn sunrise, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

A saintly old tree in the desert
Was waiting for morning light,
When suddenly seventeen blackbirds
Passed by in a frenzied flight.

The saintly tree shook, and it trembled,
Then gathered its wits, and said,
“O blackbirds, pray, what is the reason
For hurrying in such dread?”

The saintly tree heard a faint answer
As the birds flew out of sight:
“We fear the bright rays of the morning,
So we are seeking the night.”

The saintly tree seemed to nod sagely,
Though rooted in barren waste,
As if understanding completely,
The reason for the birds’ haste.

Raucous crow, enough!
Disturb the peace no longer,
screeching at your mate!

noisy crow on the mountain,
let them rest in peace!

Have you no respect,
crow on the distant mountain,
for the rising sun?
