Raucous crow, enough!
Disturb the peace no longer,
screeching at your mate!

Desiccated bones—
noisy crow on the mountain,
let them rest in peace!

Have you no respect,
crow on the distant mountain,
for the rising sun?

Have you waited long

Walt Whitman Would Have Loved It

DSC_0189 (1)
August sunrise, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

Walt Whitman would have loved it,
The song I heard at dawn,
A part of the great chorus
That seamlessly goes on:

The singing of a nation
In voices great and small—
Workers in the factories,
And horses in the stall;

Stones in parched and lonely lands,
A bird upon the wing—
When the blazing sun comes up
All things begin to sing.

Crow on the mountain,
don’t you ever grow weary
of scolding the stones?

Lonesome little dove,
you flood the desert with song
morning by morning.
