Public Defender

DSC_0346
Geese at Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona

This was on
the Daily Show:

Did you hear the one
about the public defender
who got confused
and represented
the wrong thief?
The charges were dropped,
but the thief ended up
as a lonely insomniac.
Which just goes to show,
I suppose,
that even a college-educated person
(I’m thinking of the public defender)
had better remember his (or
her) p’s and q’s
before he (or she) cleanses
(or attempts to cleanse)
the soul of another.

At the journey’s end
one more weary soul takes flight—
autumn turns to ash.

In the deep silence
of an old ironwood tree
nests a great horned owl.

Whirling with Solomon

 photo 187_zpsca0b543e.jpg

Each tiny poem begins with a line from Chapter 2 of “Song of Solomon,” taken from the King James Bible.

~~ 1 ~~

the singing of birds—
her soul yields to the trilling
of their morning tongues

~~ 2 ~~

the rain is over
earth’s parched palate is waiting
for another spring

~~ 3 ~~

upon the mountains
pumas mix with the ravens—
a mingling of tongues

~~ 4 ~~

voice of the turtle
more subtle than any breeze
soughing through the hills

~~ 5 ~~

the little foxes
fresh from the hunt at daybreak
feasting in their den

~~ 6 ~~

The winter is past—
hints of ice and snow still lurk
among the shadows.

~~ 7 ~~

shadows flee away
as the toasty hours approach
with high noon’s blazing

~~ 8 ~~

among the lilies
she tends morning by morning
one barbarous thorn

~~ 9 ~~

among the lilies
morning and afternoon sex
with her beloved

~~ 10 ~~

the secret places—
in them the lingering scents
of hurried affairs

~~ 11 ~~

the banqueting house
redolent of gin and wine
even before noon

~~ 12 ~~

lily among thorns—
the soul in dereliction
still fragrant with grace

In the Soul’s Pasture

Banner photo BANNER.jpg

~~ 1 ~~

in the soul’s pasture
three dappled horses grazing
on errant starfire

~~ 2 ~~

in the soul’s pasture
a signal from the horses
that smoke will follow

~~ 3 ~~

In the soul’s pasture
a rose of hope is blooming,
nourished by God’s grace.

~~ 4 ~~

in the soul’s pasture
a plant of boundless mercy—
food for hungry ones

~~ 5 ~~

In the soul’s pasture
the dismal and forsaken
find themselves again.

~~ 6 ~~

In the soul’s pasture
tiny, meandering streams
quench the pilgrim’s thirst.

~~ 7 ~~

In the soul’s pasture
bombs and bullets melt away—
plowshares take their place.

~~ 8 ~~

in the soul’s pasture
a spot where tumbleweeds thrive
threatening to spread

~~ 9 ~~

In the soul’s pasture
a ball of mud is lying
mid the sweet grasses.

~~ 10 ~~

In the soul’s pasture,
although some locks are rusted,
others turn with ease.

~~ 11 ~~

In the soul’s pasture
three pilgrims thrust and parry
with their wooden swords.

~~ 12 ~~

In the soul’s pasture,
somewhere near the edge of time,
pipers play a dirge.
