Fading

The winter sun sets over Yuma County, Arizona.
Day fades into dusk—
a dove returns to her nest,
singing one last song.

Sunset

A December sunset dances through the sky of the Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona.
As they cook supper,
no one in the homeless camp
admires the sunset.

Song

Late winter sunset, Yuma County, Arizona
Wilderness evening—
a dove returns to her nest,
cooing one last song.

A Voice in the Night

Winter sunset, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona.
She lifted her voice against the sun,
Cursing because the daylight was done.
The coming of night would make her feel blue,
For none of her dreams would ever come true.
She pillowed her head and turned off the light,
Preparing to face the terrors of night,
But then came a voice, a voice not her own,
Whispering things from the past she had known:
You are the daughter of wisdom and light,
The child of mercy and goodness and right.
Be not afraid of the terrors ahead.
Lie down and sleep, child, for safe is your bed.
Over her heart washed a wave of relief,
The voice in the night assuaging her grief.

Dove

Midsummer sunrise, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
Little desert dove,
I listen for your singing
sunrise to sunset.

Settled

Day’s end, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Southern California
Little cactus wren,
have you settled for the night
in this lonely place?

Chilling

Saguaro cactus on the outskirts of Ajo, Arizona
A cactus alone on a hill,
When winter came, took a great chill;
It sneezed and it snoozed,
It freezed and it froozed,
That cactus alone on a hill.
~~ ~~ ~~
A lone saguaro
pierces the clouds at sundown
with its deadly spines.

Bell

Day’s end, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
At the sunset bell,
not another word from you,
trembling little dove!
