Weird Couplets for Ending the Year

Reasonable weather will come, and it will go.
Why weather does the things it does, who can ever know?

What’s the point of running when running’s such a pain?
By running from your problems, what do you hope to gain?

A newborn calf and camel are nuzzling the same cow.
Despite its humpy little back the desert beast knows how.

A legion of angels, if I should insist,
Will stay by my side until they’re dismissed.

I have no interest, darling, in dragging out this year.
It’s almost gone—good riddance! Do I make that clear?

Perfect Weather

DSC_0789
Campground in Giant Sequoia National Monument, California.

If you’re going camping, you’ll need a new tent;
A blue one is worth every dollar and cent
You spend for its color and beauty and style—
The weather is perfect, let’s camp for a while!

Signs and Wonders

~~ 1 ~~

an old leather purse
abandoned by the roadside
now the mouse’s home

~~ 2 ~~

a pot of black ink
to welcome the empty pen
for one more comma

~~ 3 ~~

the clip in her hair
holding every strand in place—
blast of April wind

~~ 4 ~~

spreading coffee stain
turning a white tablecloth
the color of dust

~~ 5 ~~

lying in the shade
of a spreading live oak tree
the naked lovers

~~ 6 ~~

on the old whore’s mouth
iridescent pink lipstick—
her seductive moue

~~ 7 ~~

turbulent weather
brewing in the house next door
their angry voices

~~ 8 ~~

dissonant voices—
gleaners in the barley field
squabbling over grain

~~ 9 ~~

on the blue velour
a dozen signs and wonders
none of them explained

~~ 10 ~~

diaphanous veil
shrouding an empty doorway—
the flyspecked fabric

~~ 11 ~~

Why every grass blade
is mottled with rusty specks
the grasshoppers know.

~~ 12 ~~

winter solitude—
closing the white lace curtains
to the raging storm
