Over the Coffin

original

Over the coffin
three wizened hags burn incense—
long dead is their queen.

~~ ~~ ~~

over the coffin
a pall the hue of sunset—
army widow keens

~~ ~~ ~~

over the coffin
no moral judgments uttered
by the grieving band

The widow, cradling
in her arms a lily, keens
for all the living.
