Unprepared

On seeing the world about them go splash,
They put on their helmets, ready to dash
Into the glimmering, shimmering waves
That will soon carry them into their graves.

They haven’t a prayer, they haven’t a chance,
They run through the door, preparing to dance
With spiraling waves that will not forgive—
Deadly the moments the boys won’t outlive.

Could ever there be a much sadder song
Than that of a day when all things go wrong?
Maybe the wrong would turn right, if we cared,
But plague time is here, and we’re unprepared.

Spring

1
First great change of spring—
the coronavirus spreads
all over the world.

2
On the patio
six feet away from my friend
we share springtime tea.

3
first nibble of spring—
a handful of raw almonds
with my morning tea

4
Through a small window
I watch the first spring robins
foraging for worms.

5
First possum of spring—
I’m inclined to think he’s dead
till his tail twitches.

6
Spring sneaks through my yard—
the first blossom’s opening
brings me to my knees.

The Sun’s in My Eyes

The sun’s in my eyes, I fear I’ll go blind.
There’s ice in the attic, and I’m of a mind
To look for a world that’s calmer than calm,
Where even the view from the bathroom is balm;
No astral projections, no blood on the floor,
Sweet music is all that I’m looking for.
How fluid is life, how fleeting, yet sweet!
Now that I’m done with this rhyming, I’m beat!

Beautiful Place

The world is a beautiful place
For every creed, color and race;
There’s room for us all,
The great and the small—
No need to seek more room in space.

Downplay

In a box of castoff wood,
Shadows do what shadows should:
Downplay darkness, accent light,
Making all the world seem right.

a perfect spider web
stuck to my glasses

how magical the world looks
through a thousand silken strands

~~ 1 ~~

discarded boxes
sheltering homeless people
down by the river

~~ 2 ~~

journey into night—
your heart at the beginning
fluttering wildly

~~ 3 ~~

In a perfect world
there would be no mosquitoes,
neither rats nor lice.

~~ 4 ~~

an autumn morning—
walking a misty pathway
wet leaves underfoot

~~ 5 ~~

Everything depends
on rain, a red wheelbarrow
and some white chickens.

~~ 6 ~~

a long journey to
nowhere in particular
and then back again

~~ 7 ~~

Beyond the back fence
a world I have never seen
is waiting for me.

~~ 8 ~~

a short siesta
in the silence of her room—
insomniac’s dream

~~ 9 ~~

coffee for the guests
pouring again and again
until the last drop

~~ 10 ~~

rainy afternoon—
finding a place of refuge
in the library

~~ 11 ~~

finding a table
where we can talk till midnight
nursing our whisky

~~ 12 ~~

summer afternoon
the head of one sunflower
drooping toward the earth
