Blue Monday: Hungry Mallard

IMG_3472
Part of a sign promoting clean lakes and streams, Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona

One day a hungry mallard
Was looking for a snack;
He looked both up- and downstream,
He looked both front and back.

He settled for a minnow,
While hungering for more,
Then swam back reluctantly
To the distant shore.

Ordinary

An ordinary duck
On an ordinary day
Doing ordinary things
In an ordinary way.

But take another look
At that ordinary duck:
I think it’s quite amazing
That he’s not built like a truck!

Saguaro flowers

Saguaro cactus blossoms, Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona

Saguaro flowers glowing
Against the bright blue sky
Fill me with greatest pleasure,
And here’s the reason why:

I think there’s nothing finer
Than seeing a white bloom
Juxtaposed against the sky
To chase away my gloom.

Desolate places—
something akin to wisdom
lingers in the stones.

News in cactus land

DSC_0243 (2)

What’s the news in cactus land?
What’s the TV say?
Is there any hope that rain
Will settle dust today?

Maybe someone has a tip
I can take to heart.
Wait! There’s always NPR—
I’ve heard folks there are smart!

Yellow butterfly,
does the white blossom please you?
Will you settle there?

Blooms

DSC_0293 (2)

Only in the desert sands
Do cacti thrive and bloom,
Not on crowded city streets
Where there’s no breathing room.

If you find a place of sand,
Where human prints are few,
There the lowly cactus waits
To show its blooms to you.
