Christmas Music

The music I adore most
Comes round but once a year.
They call it Christmas music,
It fills my heart with cheer.

I love to sing of Mary,
Of Joseph and the Child;
I love to sing of angels—
I’m sure they must be wild.

The shepherds in the pasture?
I sing their praises too,
For they ran to Bethlehem
To see the baby Jew.

The Magi on their camels,
Who traveled from afar
Found the Baby’s manger bed
By following a star.

And so, when winter deepens,
And earth is cold and drear,
I sing a song of people
Who cast aside their fear.

But what if, in the summer,
I sang a Christmas song?
Would all my friends desert me,
And tell me that I’m wrong?

I think I know the answer,
And this is what I know:
No scorn can silence music—
The notes will swell and grow.
