Way

Walkway, Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona
Adjei Agyei-Baah’s haiku about a beggar inspires me to write a new haiku about the people we would prefer not to see:
roadside walk—
a beggar stretches leg
as hand
~~ ~~ ~~
shadowy walkway—
the beggar no one can see
stretching out his hand
~~ ~~ ~~
Sometimes the way leads through shadows.

Scarecrow

Gnarled ironwood tree, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
Adjei Agyei-Baah’s haiku about a scarecrow inspires me to write a new haiku about a different kind of scarecrow:
full moon─
a scarecrow watches
its own shadow
~~ ~~ ~~
desert scarecrow tree
flapping at clouds and shadows—
next time the full moon

Feigning

Abandoned amphitheatre, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, México
on his shadow bed
feigning health and heartiness
one of Shakespeare’s kings
~~ ~~ ~~
Plays past echo in the stones.

no sign of tears
to prove your name

perhaps the wind has dried them
or a hundred days of sun
