Four Autumn Haiku
1.
On the far mesa,
strangled shadows gasp for light—
deepening autumn.
2.
I miss you, Father—
it was hard to say farewell
on that autumn day.
3.
I fall into bed,
beat from raking autumn leaves,
and page through some books.
4.
Seven kinds of mud
slow me on my pilgrimage—
long autumn journey.

Four Haiku
at the water’s edge
the saved wait to be baptized—
old-time religion
shadows by the bridge
sculpted from hollowed-out light—
great blue heron’s cry
feet follow cinders
leading to the temple gate
a place of great grace
fingers framed by light
clutching an old rosary
carved of human bone

Crow

Autumn afternoon—
on the mountain’s shadow side
a mocking crow hides.

Fishing
Lone sunflower, Northern Arizona
Although I don’t fish, I do love sunflowers, and so I am charmed by Richard Wright’s haiku:
Like a fishhook,
The sunflower’s long shadow
Hovers in the lake.
~~ ~~ ~~
In a sea of weeds
a lone sunflower fishes
for its lost shadow.
