Blue Monday: Doormat

IMG_4426
Doormat at the entrance to my classroom, Yuma County, Arizona

The doormat’s getting gritty,
It’s time to take a broom,
And sweep away the sand grains
Before they trash the room.

I like to have a classroom
That’s free of grit and sand,
A place that welcomes students—
At least, that’s what I’ve planned!

Blue Monday: Bag

IMG_5578
Discarded plastic bag, Yuma County, Arizona

A bag that was snagged in the sand
Polluted this beautiful land.
’Twas not the bag’s fault,
But that of the dolt
Who tossed it aside with his hand.

On a country road
a dove begins at daybreak
to sing a new song.

No Respect for Borders

IMG_7273
Warning sign at a rest area on Interstate 8, Yuma County, Arizona

They’ve no respect for borders,
The birds and snakes and bees;
They slither and they flutter
Whichever way they please.

If humans dare to challenge
The courses creatures take,
They heed their inner compass,
Thus making no mistake.

Discarded

How useful is an upside-down chair?

Two words linked with a hyphen count as one, of course!

Kintsugi

Broken dinnerware, littering the desert near Yuma, Arizona

Kintsugi master,
gather up these scattered shards,
and with your lacquer,
glue them together again,
more beautiful than before.

a conceited rooster thinks
he coaxed up the sun.

Reasons

IMG_5960
Sand verbena, Yuma County, Arizona

A flower has no gender
As far as I can see;
But still I have some reasons
That blooms appeal to me:

I love them for their beauty,
Fragility, and scent—
And yet with sudden windstorms,
How quickly they are spent!

Mirrored

 photo IMG_2421_zpshc6wps7k.jpg
Reflection of a winter sunrise in the rear window of a recreational vehicle, Yuma County, Arizona

Mirrored in the window
Of a wilderness RV,
The sunrise in midwinter
Is brighter than the sea.

The sight befuddles blackbirds
And ravens on the wing.
But the little cactus wren?
She cannot help but sing!
