Shadows

Nighttime shadows surround a house in Yuma County, Arizona.

On a wintry night
in southern Arizona
shadows multiply.

Text Me a Message

Text me a message before I am gone,
Before waving shadows cover my lawn.
Candles and peaches, not rats in a bowl—
Text me of these things to cheer up my soul.
Don’t text about fences shredded by fate,
Just stick to the truth, let’s have a clean slate.
The truth being this, and always will be:
I’m made for you, dear, and you’re made for me.

Little brown sparrow,
from somewhere in the shadows
you sing notes of joy.

Brown-eyed girl

IMG_5356
Detail from a mural in Artists Alley, Ajo, Arizona

A penny for your thoughts,
brown-eyed girl.
Can anyone grow wise
thinking only of the stars?
When shadows nestle in your hair,
becoming bent and crooked—
is that how wisdom begins?
What about the young boy
who loops himself around
the boa constrictor
and survives to tell the tale?
Will you be like him?
Will you have a tale to tell?
How will you begin?
A penny (that’s enough)
for your thoughts,
brown-eyed girl.

Yellow butterfly,
you rest within the shadows
that mask a stone wall.

Walk

A small wooden bridge—
first, we walk through the shadows,
then into the light.
