Five Haiku for the Frigid Season

1.
Come now, let us mourn
all things broken, chipped, and torn—
deepening winter.

2.
Winter loneliness—
who has skill enough to mend
my threadbare blue shirt?

3.
Winter drive to work—
on the bridge I see skid marks,
remnants of a crash.

4.
Itching to plant seeds,
I thumb through the catalog
that came in the mail.

5.
Bar of soap in hand,
I draw water for a bath—
midwinter pleasure.

The Filling

Underneath a palace table hungry dogs eat husks and wings;
Even twilight does not daunt them when the regal peacock sings
Songs of anger, songs of yearning, songs of drawing forth a knife—
Runic songs that bid the Presence come as fire to be our wife.
See, she vanquishes injustice! See, she turns things upside down!
Then the fiery Presence fills us, and at last we wear her crown!

Bliss

heartinsand_zps9ee2215c
A heart drawn in the sand by lovers, Puerto Nuevo, Baja California Norte, México

I hate broccoli—
loathe the stuff.
But it is bliss
to kick off my sandals
and draw on the beach
with my toes.
It is rapture
to wear a different wig each day
and keep people guessing:
“Who is that woman?”
And when I purse my lips
to kiss you? O what delight!
I don’t even worry about the dents
I got in my car last night!

NOTE TO THE READER: Some elements of this poem are autobiographical, but I am NOT a hater of broccoli! The declaration of antipathy toward that particular vegetable just happened to work with this poem.
