Three Haiku as Autumn Deepens
1.
raking fallen leaves—
my ceremony to heal
the wounds of autumn
2.
a distant mirage—
the languid days of summer
when we sipped iced tea
3.
My dwelling’s empty,
so come, corn pollen laughter,
come, O mountain song!

Schoolboy
Sunflowers, southern Colorado
~~ 1 ~~
spreading jam thickly
on a slice of whole wheat bread—
ravenous schoolboy
~~ 2 ~~
pollen in the air
making the young schoolboy sneeze—
his homework scatters
~~ 3 ~~
A young schoolboy hops
froglike to biology
down the long hallway.
~~ 4 ~~
His former teacher
pats the schoolboy on his head
as though he’s her pet.
~~ 5 ~~
through summer-scorched weeds
schoolboys pushing their way home—
crooked is the path
~~ 6 ~~
Playground katydids—
schoolboys pay no attention
as they chase the girls.
~~ 7 ~~
Bored out of his gourd,
a schoolboy totes up reasons
for being outdoors.
~~ 8 ~~
The hottest schoolboy’s
unavailable right now,
having been grounded.
~~ 9 ~~
Little red capsules—
the schoolboy’s gulping them down
as fast as he can.
~~ 10 ~~
shoplifting schoolboy—
his teachers thought him honest
until his arrest
~~ 11 ~~
In this schoolboy’s life
someone needs to intervene
before it’s too late.

Showers
Agave in bloom, April 2016, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Southern California
showers of pollen
falling from the agave—
lizards take shelter

Grains
Globemallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua), Apache County, Arizona
ripened pollen grains
hiding in the mallow’s heart—
feast for bee and ant

Ravenous
Mesquite blossoms at daybreak, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
soon to be devoured
fragile yellow pollen grains
ravenous the sand
