Let Me Go

Things related, things alike—
I will take them on this hike.

Remember that my part was chosen;
In that role my life was frozen.

Each breath leaves me sorry, dear;
The results are crystal clear.

Promise me you will not fast
When my life is past at last.

Cover me with Grandma’s quilt;
Over that toss Grandpa’s kilt.

Total everything I owe.
Now I’m ready—let me go!

Haibun: Give Thanks

“I’m too tired to be grateful,” I growl, and sip a third cup of coffee. I listen to my watch ticking. I remember the scent of the tangerine I peeled on a long-ago Thanksgiving Day. The citrus oils stung my chapped fingers, making me wince. But that was the best tangerine I have ever tasted. And the longer I live, the more clearly I see that I can choose how my day will go by changing my attitude. “Don’t be fooled,” I say to myself, “gratitude is the path to contentment. Make every day a holy day. Give thanks.”

making my way toward twilight
with a few detours

Public Defender

This was on
the Daily Show:

Did you hear the one
about the public defender
who got confused
and represented
the wrong thief?
The charges were dropped,
but the thief ended up
as a lonely insomniac.
Which just goes to show,
I suppose,
that even a college-educated person
(I’m thinking of the public defender)
had better remember his (or
her) p’s and q’s
before he (or she) cleanses
(or attempts to cleanse)
the soul of another.

Stargazing

~~ 1 ~~

Who can separate
the stargazers from their quest
for the perfect light?

~~ 2 ~~

familiar story—
for love of all things starry
gazing in her eyes

~~ 3 ~~

gazing at heaven’s
architecture—the planets,
the comets, the stars

~~ 4 ~~

never forgotten—
the stars the elders gazed on
giving each a name

~~ 5 ~~

The old stargazer—
she holds her head in her hands
as the last star falls.

~~ 6 ~~

Who will remember
the stars we gaze at tonight?
Perhaps the ravens.

~~ 7 ~~

Mayan stargazers—
the old traditions live on
at the pyramids.

~~ 8 ~~

one woman
gazing hungrily
at the stars

~~ 9 ~~

unpredictable—
the customs of stargazers
on a windy night

~~ 10 ~~

gazing at the stars—
old man with tremulous hands
raising them in praise

~~ 11 ~~

gazing at the sky—
blotted out by city lights
every single star

~~ 12 ~~

a separate star
upon which no one can gaze—
the diffident light
