Afternoon

Brilliant winter day, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Southern California

A few passing clouds
muffle a hawk’s piercing scream—
winter afternoon.

Screaming for Ice Cream

Screaming for ice cream
Is one of the ways
To cool yourself down
On hot summer days.

Screaming for ice cream
Is what I will do
When the sun sizzles—
Now, how about you?

A Scream in the Night

A scream in the night!
Whose voice did I hear?
Was it a banshee?
It sounded so near—

Too near for comfort,
Too close to my head;
I think I will run
And hide in my bed.

not even a scream
can dislodge desert shadows—
a fine sticking point
